SAM
is a small NGO, but we have succeeded remarkably, particularly
by taking up very relevant programmes for liberation and development
of the oppressed poor.
-
In
a short span of 20 years, we have organized District level Unions
of Dalit Women, Irula Tribals, Washer people and Sugarcane Cutters.
-
The
Trade Union of the Sugarcane Cutters has been acclaimed even by
the left Parties as it has built a much –needed bridge between
the ever warring Dalit and Backward Caste workers. Their wages have
in creased remarkably and today they are being paid by the sugar
mills, instead of the sugarcane farmers as was done earlier.
-
Land
lessness is the most important cause for poverty and oppression
of the Dalits. For the first time in history, we identified 200,000
acres of Panchami lands in Tamilnadu, specially assigned to Dalits
which have been usurped by the rich and powerful. We Organized continuous
struggles to retrieve these lands and in the process, lost two of
our colleagues to police bullets.
-
We
have retrieved over 1000 acres of such lands in different parts
of the district.
-
Majority
of the Washerpeople in Kanchipuram district , after being unionized,
have given up their traditional infra-dig and beggarly way of receiving
food as wages for theier hard labour. A model has been created for
Washerpeople all over for emulation.
-
We
have so far freed and rehabilitated over 1500 child workers from
the silk looms at Kanchipuram.
-
Over
800 young girls and boys have been trained in different technical
skills and Placed in decent jobs.
-
One
of our women self help groups has been acclaimed as one of the best
in the state, for its successful co-operative inland fish farming.
